Dinner with Live Music in Casco Viejo
Where dinner and live music meet in Casco Viejo: what nights to go, what to expect from the volume and how to book a table that lets you talk.
Casco Viejo does not separate dinner from going out. The same evening usually starts at a table and ends on a rooftop, and in between there is almost always music playing somewhere. Knowing which room does what saves you from shouting through your main course.
The three formats
- Restaurant with a set. A duo or trio at moderate volume while the kitchen works. You can still hold a conversation. This is the dinner format.
- Bar with a band. Louder, later, food is secondary. Great after dinner, difficult during it.
- Rooftop with a DJ. The last stop of the night, and the reason the quarter has a reputation.
What gets played
Panamanian audiences are unusually broad: jazz standards, Cuban son, bolero, Spanish guitar and salsa all appear on the same weekend. Live jazz has a real following here, and Casco Viejo is where it lives.
How to plan the evening
- Book dinner for 8 p.m. if you want to hear the music and still talk.
- Ask for a table away from the speakers, and mention it when you reserve.
- Check whether the set is acoustic or amplified; the difference is the whole evening.
- Leave the rooftop for after 10 p.m., which is when the quarter actually wakes up.
A note on the calendar
Music schedules in the old town move with the season and with holidays. Thursday to Saturday is the safe window; between January and March the quarter runs at full capacity every night, and reservations stop being optional.
