Panama City Nightlife: Bars, Live Music and Where to Start
How nightlife works in Panama City: which neighbourhoods, what time things start, what to drink and where to begin the evening.
Panama City goes out late and it goes out in specific places. Knowing which neighbourhood does what saves an evening of wandering, because the city is spread out and the districts do not blend into one another.
The neighbourhoods
- Casco Antiguo (Casco Viejo). The only district where you can walk from one place to the next. Cocktail bars in restored colonial houses, rooftops facing the bay, and old neighbourhood bars that never left. This is where visitors should start.
- Calle Uruguay. The traditional going-out strip. Louder, younger, club-oriented.
- Marbella and San Francisco. Hotel bars and after-office. Busy from five, quiet by eleven.
- Amador Causeway. Open-air, by the water, more relaxed and family-friendly early on.
The timing
Nothing happens early. Happy hour runs 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, restaurants fill around 8:30, bars get going after ten, and clubs do not fill until midnight. Thursday is the strongest night of the week â the city goes out and it is less crowded than Friday or Saturday.
What to drink that is actually Panamanian
- Ron Abuelo â the national rum, distilled and aged in Pesé, Herrera. The aged expressions are worth drinking neat.
- Seco Herrerano â Panama’s own spirit, distilled from sugar cane juice rather than molasses. Locals drink it seco con leche, with evaporated milk and ice.
- Panamanian craft beer â a small but growing scene.
- Local fruit â passion fruit, soursop, tamarind and nance in the cocktails. This is where the city’s bartending gets interesting.
Live music and salsa
Live music in restaurants runs Thursday to Saturday, usually starting between eight and nine. Salsa works differently: it is organised as themed nights rather than dedicated venues, most often midweek, and announced on social media week by week rather than on websites.
How to start the evening
The pattern that works: sunset on a rooftop before six, dinner around eight, then walk. In Casco Antiguo everything is within a few blocks. Aya la Vida, on Avenida A and Calle 12 Oeste, opens from five in the afternoon until one in the morning Thursday to Saturday, with an open-air terrace, Panamanian cooking and live music.
Frequently asked questions
Is Casco Viejo safe at night?
The tourist core is patrolled and busy until late. Stay on the streets with people and restaurants on them.
What time do bars close?
Between two and three in the morning at weekends.
Do I need cash?
Cards work almost everywhere. Panama uses the US dollar, so there is no currency exchange.
What does a cocktail cost?
Nine to fifteen dollars in craft cocktail bars, less in neighbourhood places.
Which night is best?
Thursday. Programming is on, the city is out, and it is less packed than the weekend.
